It's the first snapshot Wednesday of 2025, and we have some fun new features to kick off the new year. This snapshot adds new ambient features to the game, including wildflowers, leaf litter, and falling leaves. Pigs are getting two new variants: you may venture into the colder biomes to find the cold pig, or head for sunnier spots to meet its counterpart – the warm pig! Lodestones are also becoming easier to craft, making them more accessible in the early game. Now you'll only need an iron ingot with your chiseled stone bricks.

Shh! I'm writing this changelog from behind a Pale Oak tree – and I have to be very quiet because the Garden Awakens drop is finally here – and Creakings are spawning in Pale Gardens all across the Overworld! The Garden Awakens brings with it an eerie biome – the Pale Garden – which is carpeted in moss, filled with Pale Oak trees, and home to a unique flower called an Eyeblossom. It also brings a watchful hostile mob, the Creaking, as well as the secret to defeating (and spawning) it – the Creaking Heart! Facing up to a Creaking will also earn you Resin Clumps – another new block you can craft into Resin Bricks, or use to trim your armor. Was that everything? Oh! And we've also made some bug fixes. Now, let me see if I can back away slowly without this Creaking spotting me…

Coming in hot with a hotfix, here's Minecraft 1.21.3 with a fix for a critical issue affecting Realms with Resource Packs enabled. This version also fixes an upgrade problem with all Salmon turning small. This version will upgrade any small Salmon from previous versions into medium variants, including any from 1.21.2.

We're now releasing the Bundles of Bravery game drop for Java Edition, featuring space-saving Bundles and the addition of Hardcore Mode to Realms! This game drop is all about embarking on a new adventure, collecting everything you can along the way, and definitely not dying. Together with these additions, we've also added baby variants of Dolphins and Squids, given Redstone Torches an updated look, optimized the game, and fixed over 300 bugs! To top it off, there's also a heap of technical changes, bringing even more control to creators. Goodness, that was a lot, wasn't it? Perhaps we should've stuffed it all into a Bundle?

Do you smell that? Ah yes, it's the magical, tell-tale scent of release day Tuesday - and what a release day it is! Today we are shipping Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.5, also known as the Armored Paws drop! Travel to the Savanna and Badlands biomes and say hello to the endearing Armadillos. Find and befriend eight new Wolf variants and equip your canine companions with dyable armor made from Armadillo Scutes and go adventuring together! On the technical side, the Armored Paws drop is also introducing a change to how Java Edition spawn chunks work, the details of which we covered in the changelog for Snapshot 24w03a earlier this year. The tl;dr version of this change is that we're making the spawn chunk radius a configurable game rule and decreasing the default value by 98%. This should translate to a noticeable performance boost for most players! So what are you waiting for? Stock up on food and water and start reading through the complete 1.20.5 changelog below. New year, new Snapshot - we're now releasing the third Snapshot of Minecraft 1.20.5. This time around, we're bringing some updates to the Armadillo, the Breeze, as well as accessibility improvements. In addition to a big bundle of bug fixes, we're bringing some changes to how spawn chunks are handled. The spawn chunks are an area of the Overworld located at the world spawn which are always loaded in memory. These are useful for some players but use more of your computer’s resources and make the game load and run more slowly. (You can read more about spawn chunks at the community wiki!) In this snapshot we made the size of the spawn chunks configurable by adding a new gamerule: spawnChunkRadius. The new default setting is 2 (which creates a 48x48 block area). This is 98% smaller than the previous area and will result in a noticeable performance improvement for most players. If you would like to keep your spawn chunks working like they did before, you can use the game rule to change the spawn chunk radius value to 10. This will make your spawn chunks work the same as they did before, but you will miss out on the performance gains. This snapshot brings about a few redstone-focused changes. Notably, we’re tweaking the tick delay behavior of the crafter and the copper bulb while they’re still in experimental development. With these changes, we aim to make the crafter more consistent with other blocks that drop or eject items, and the copper bulb with other blocks that react or change state when a connected redstone signal changes. As a result of this, some contraptions built during the last few snapshots may no longer work properly. We're really excited about the tinkering opportunities both these new redstone blocks bring to the world. We're now releasing 1.20.2 for Minecraft: Java Edition. This release comes with more diamond ore in the deep regions of the world and changes to mob attack reach as well as optimizations to the game's networking performance enabling smoother online play even on low-bandwidth connections. This release also includes new features for map makers and pack creators like macro functions, a random command and pack overlays. With 1.20.2, we are making some important updates to our Player Reporting Tool to better protect the online safety of our players. You will now be able to report player skins and usernames that violate our Community Standards. The optional Villager Trade Rebalance Experiment also makes its debut in this version with changes to trades in the making that you can try out.

With Caves & Cliffs: Part I released, we’re currently hard at work at delivering the second chapter. In Caves & Cliffs: Part II, we’re not only updating the caves and adding new mountains – we are also changing the overall terrain generation to make it all fit together. As these features will bring pretty big changes, we would love your feedback! We need to sort out some technical things before we can ship these in a normal Java snapshot or Bedrock beta, so in the meantime we've created an experimental snapshot for Java that you can download separately. That way, you can try out the all new world generation and provide us with feedback while we continue our grand work of terraforming the world of Minecraft and integrating it into our normal snapshot/beta series.

Traverse through familiar, fiery wastes into new unexplored fungal forests, spooky valleys, and deltas brimming with basalt. Dig your way through these biomes and you might be able to find a new curious material, suspiciously titled "ancient debris". What will you make of it (it’s totally not Netherite)? Fight your way through hordes of Piglins… Or don't! They’re actually pretty cool if you bring some bling. And in case you find yourself in the wrong end of a bargain, make sure that you have access to a functional respawn anchor. I advise you to not use your regular bed unless you’re feeling a bit… “adventurous”. Enjoy the update!

Technology is amazing – except when it isn’t. Just the other day my own phone ended a call as I was about to order a delicious and completely legit pineapple pizza. And what does Siri mean by “Try selecting a flavor better suited for human consumption”? If this isn’t proof that the singularity is here and that the robot revolution is happening, I don’t know what is. There are a few exceptions of course (watch it technology, I’ve got my eyes on you), and today Mojang is thrilled to reveal the next big step for Minecraft as we take our game into a bold new direction where no blocky sandbox has gone before. Don’t ask us what direction though, we don’t own a compass and we’re terrible with directions.

The tide is coming in at last! That's sea-faring speak for 'Java Players! Today you get the full Update Aquatic!' There's a whole new ocean of features, impatiently waiting for you to dive in! Take a delightful swim with dolphins and tropical fish. Explore mysterious ruins and tragic shipwrecks while hunting for new deep-sea treasures. Meet turtles on the shore and defend their eggs from mobs with the new trident! Trust us, you'll want that new weapon. Because our biggest ocean update ever has also made these seas much more dangerous places to explore. Get too distracted by the colourful coral, and you might get dragged down to the ocean floor by bubble columns. Which could result in introducing yourself to the Drowned. What are the Drowned? Why not swim down to the ocean floor and find out? After you! Still, at least you're safe on land! Well, as long as you get enough sleep. Otherwise, you might meet The Phantom, the mob you voted into Minecraft last year. Be careful what you wish for, and enjoy the update!
